Kevin Davis is a Director with Chess Consulting LLC. He has more than 30 years of accounting, auditing, and consulting experience serving clients across a wide range of industries. Kevin works with companies and their legal counsel on complex investigations and litigation matters involving accounting and financial reporting irregularities, misappropriation of assets, circumvention of internal controls, and whistleblower allegations. He also advises companies and their audit committees on issues related to accounting principles, auditing standards, and financial reporting matters. His experience includes white collar criminal cases, accounting and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigations, and corporate governance matters.

Prior to joining Chess, Kevin served as a director in the disputes and investigations practice of an international consulting firm. He was also an audit and business advisory partner at Arthur Andersen and an audit principal at EY.

Professional Experience


  • Forensic Accounting and Corporate Investigations. Kevin’s work with companies and their legal counsel includes forensic analysis, evaluations of financial reporting and related securities disclosure matters, and reporting of findings and recommendations to legal counsel, senior management, boards of directors, and the SEC. Representative examples of Kevin’s recent engagement experience include:
    • Led multiple teams assisting legal counsel in responding to both formal and informal inquiries by the SEC related to alleged revenue recognition accounting irregularities. Work included extensive document review, accounting research and analysis, interviewing company personnel, and presentations before the SEC staff.
    • Hired by counsel to assist in the defense of former financial executives in civil and criminal trials. Led the review of documents and the analysis of accounting positions to support preparation of declarations. Assisted in the preparation of expert reports and related deposition and trial testimony.
    • Assisted in oversight review of a public company’s negotiated settlement with the SEC. Project focused on a review of the company’s implementation of financial controls to address deficiencies which led to restatement, and the review of the internal oversight of such controls by internal audit and corporate management.
    • Co-leader of team hired by a Fortune 500 company’s audit committee to review certain accounting and financial reporting matters associated with its largest business segment. Investigation focused on review of revenue recognition practices and certain contingent liabilities and related accruals.
    • Led team hired by global pharmaceutical company to assist in defense of compensatory damages case. Assisted in the calculation of lost profits and preparation of expert report.
    • Participated on a team charged with the development of a mortgage review program to assess compliance with specific mortgage processing requirements. Reviewed mortgage packages to provide perspective on the application of work steps as they were developed
    • Hired by a Special Committee to lead a forensic accounting team in investigating employee stock option award practices and related accounting.
    • Retained by a large public company to evaluate the results of an investigation performed by a third party related to stock options and assist the company in evaluating the accounting impact and related disclosures. Additional services were provided to assist the company with reconciling various financial statement accounts during the restatement process.

Complex Accounting and Business Advisory:

  • Financial Accounting and Restatements. Kevin advises senior management and audit committees on financial accounting and SEC reporting matters. He provides consultation on the interpretation and implementation of accounting standards. He has also led engagements involving the restatement of financial statements and has assisted senior management and audit committees in evaluating the impact of accounting and financial reporting errors and related matters.
  • Accounting and Audit Support.Kevin has worked closely with clients and their outside auditors to assess, support, and conclude on complex accounting, financial reporting, and disclosure matters.

Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance:

  • Internal Controls. Kevin has worked with clients in connection with assessing the design and adequacy of internal controls across critical business functions. He has led multiple projects related to the review and assessment of both public and private companies’ business processes around accounting and financial reporting functions.
  • Corporate Governance and Compliance Reviews.Kevin has advised senior management on corporate governance matters including management control structures and control activities designed to ensure strategies, directives, and regulatory requirements are properly operationalized within the organization and carried out systematically and effectively.
  • Business Risk Management and Internal Audit. Kevin assists companies in establishing and improving their overall business risk management processes to ensure key risks are identified, analyzed, and properly responded to. His work has included the performance of enterprise-wide business risk assessments and the development of risk-based internal audit plans.
